The Drama Game
A card game for 2 or more players
jcreed recently linked this awesome flash game that "embodies linear logic proof search". I was quite amused in how much drama I was creating in the lives of my poor protagonists, which was the inspiration for this game.
In this game, you are creating drama in the lives of your hapless friends, watching them fall in love, become enemies, bicker, steal, and die. You win by creating the most drama.
Materials
For this game, you will need some way of tracking people you know. This can be photographs of friends or simply friends' names on cards or pieces of paper. You need enough for each player to have up to 5 people.
Additionally, for every 4 players, you will need: 3 copies of the cards in actions.pdf, 1 copy of the cards in victory.pdf, 1 copy of the cards in surprise.pdf, 1 copy of the cards in setup.pdf, and one sheet of tokens. All of the cards and tokens should be cut out.
Setup
Each player chooses (or randomly draws) 4 people and places them in front of them.
The various tokens are placed in a pile for easy access. These are used to track relationships between people and status of people.
Shuffle the setup cards and deal 2 "Status" and 2 "Relationship" cards to each player. Each player sets up their people as they wish using these cards. The remaining setup cards are placed to the side, and will not be used in the game.
Finally, shuffle the remaining (action, victory, and surprise) cards into a "main" deck. Each player draws 4 cards from this deck.
Play
Starting with the player who has had the most drama in their lives recently, play proceeds clockwise.
During their turn, a player:
1) Draws two cards from the main deck
2) Plays (or discards) exactly two cards from their hand
a) Action cards are played on any player whose current people state matches the "Prerequisites" on the card. Change the state of those people to match the "Result" of the card. Then "attach" that action card to one of your people (your choice).
b) Victory cards are attached to one of your people (your choice), and may only be played if there is a player whose current people state matches the "Prerequisites" on the card.
c) Surprise cards have a one-time effect on the game. Each card details its effect and targets. Discard it after use.
Play then passes to the player's left.
Victory
Action and victory cards have points on them (dots next to the card name) representing the amount of drama that has been caused. You win the game when you have 20 points attached across all of your people.
Alternately, you may play the game until the deck is exhausted, and the player with the most points wins.
Tokens
There are many tokens that detail relationships between one or more people. There are three categories of tokens: Single, Pair, and Multiple.
Single tokens are tokens that do not link to another person. Single tokens are: Criminal, Dead, Depressed, Item, Powerful.
Pair tokens are tokens that form relationships between two people. These tokens are always placed in pairs. Place a pair of matching color to denote the relationship. The tokens' color should not match other pairs of the same token to avoid confusion. There are 6 colors of each of these. Pair tokens are: Enemies, Lovers, Married.
Multiple tokens are tokens that there is only one "group" of per person. All people with that token share that relationship. Multiple tokens are: Coworkers, Family.
